The Whispering Woods

The Whispering Woods is a vast, ancient forest nestled within the eastern reaches of Iridia, bordering the Mountains of Triz. Beneath it lie the Zeloréi — the buried mass that came down over the east during The Collapse and settled into the bedrock. The eastern peoples named it long before anyone thought to ask what it was a piece of, and the name stuck so thoroughly that its origin is forgotten rather than disputed: the Zeloréi are Irion's, like every Scale in the world.

The Whispering Woods: giant mossy trees, purple crystal spires over buried Scales, glowing Echo Sprites and a Scale Serpent coiled in the misty canopy

What makes the Woods remarkable is not that they sit on buried Scales. It is that they are calm.

Ecology and the Held Green

A forest grown over raw resonance should be unlivable — magic pouring up through the roots with nothing to shape it, everything growing wrong at once. The deep Whispering Wood is instead the steadiest ground in eastern Iridia. Oaks grow like oaks. Seasons arrive roughly when expected. The forest floor is a riot of bioluminescent fungi and vibrant mosses, extravagant but entirely stable, and the great Echo Trees absorb and replay residual magical echoes from the Scales below as a low, constant murmur — hence the forest's name.

That steadiness is not natural and the people who live there know it. It is held, deliberately, by Sylvenar, who is anchored to the Silent Scale somewhere beneath the deep wood.

The edges are another matter. Where the hold thins — the outer reaches, the logged margins, anywhere the green has been broken — the old behaviour resurfaces: trees sprouting or shrinking within hours, paths that are not where they were, landmarks gone by morning. The most notable of these is the Shifting Bloom, where whole sections of the outer forest rearrange themselves, as if the land were breathing. Guides treat the margins as the dangerous part of the journey and the interior as the rest, which reverses what most travellers expect and gets a number of them killed each year.

Creatures of the Whispering Wood

The creatures inhabiting the Whispering Wood are as varied and unpredictable as the forest itself. Many are mutated or evolved versions of common Iridian fauna, adapted to the unstable magical environment.

  • Scale Serpents: Large, serpentine creatures whose scales shimmer with residual magic from the Scales. They are territorial and fiercely protective of their domains. While they can be dangerous, some have been known to guide travelers with their innate magical senses – provided they’re offered a suitable tribute.
  • Zelvorath: A serpent titan that lives mostly underground beneath the Woods. Its burrows and the raised ridges of earth between them mark where it moves; now and then it surfaces, arching above the trees.
  • Echo Sprites: Small, mischievous creatures composed of pure magical energy. They feed on residual echoes and often lead travelers astray with illusions and tricks, although sometimes they offer cryptic clues to those who can decipher their playful riddles. They are often found around the Echo Trees.
  • Shifting Striders: Amphibious creatures adapted to the shifting landscape. They possess the ability to camouflage themselves within the changing environment, making them difficult to track. They are rumored to be guardians of the deeper scales.
  • Barty’s Fungi: A highly unusual parasitic fungi. Named for the Headmaster of the Headmaster’s Roost, it is capable of temporarily enhancing a creature’s magical ability. However, it carries a substantial risk of corruption or irreversible mutation.

The Cult of Dy

Rumors persist of a small, secretive group known as the Cult of Dy operating within the depths of the Whispering Wood. They are digging for the Scales, and what they want with them is not destruction — a Scale nobody has read is the one place in Iridia where an outcome is genuinely undetermined, which their faith holds to be the holiest thing there is.

The Grunthar Orcs, who regard the forest as Sylvenar's body, take a simpler view and have stopped several expeditions permanently. The Council of Elders considers the matter a growing concern; the Woods' outer reaches make tracking anyone exceptionally difficult.

What almost nobody involved has worked out is that the Cult is not digging toward a resource. It is digging toward a foundation.

Notable Scales

  • The Silent Scale: An unusually quiet Scale, deep in the interior. Rumoured to hold the key to an ancient ritual. Its silence is the oldest fact anyone can establish about the Woods, and no scholar has ever explained it.
  • The Weaver’s Scale: Nearer the western margin. It causes the surrounding vegetation to twist and contort into complex, ever-changing patterns — the clearest example of what the forest does where the hold is thin.

DM notes — the Silent Scale

The Silent Scale is quiet because Sylvenar is anchored to it and holding. This is literal, not devotional language. The stability of the entire Whispering Wood is a single deity maintaining a single Scale, and it is the only thing standing between eastern Iridia and what the Weaver's Scale does locally.

If Sylvenar fades, migrates by Resonance Drift, or is displaced, the Woods revert — and the reversion is not gradual. The Blooming Skein, downwind and rooted in the same green, goes with it, and the Grunthar Orcs lose the thing they were shaped to guard.

The Cult of Dy may not know a god is sitting on it. They are seeking an unread Scale precisely because an unread Scale is undetermined; that it is load-bearing is not information their theology would predict or welcome. Whether they discover this before or after they break the hold is a campaign-scale decision.
