Ayrith

ayrith.jpeg

The capital of Ether, built around the Burning Tree.

At the highest point of the city stands a great castle overlooking the sprawling streets below, with the Tree growing at its centre.

The capital is the oldest settlement in Ether, and the busiest. Magnificent buildings, flowing waterways, gardens and ancient structures spread outward from the Tree's roots. Zephyrians from all across Ether travel to Ayrith for celebrations, diplomacy, trade and education.

Every Sunpassage opens here, beneath the Tree's branches — the first thing any visitor to Ether sees.

The castle

The castle is not a palace. Ether has no royal family; the castle is where the Circle of Roots gathers.

The surrounding towns

Surrounding the capital are countless smaller towns, each known for something different. Some specialise in magical research, others in healing, craftsmanship, archery, swordsmanship, history, or the many abilities of the Zephyrians.

Young Zephyrians travel between these towns during their training. Education is not treated as a competition: knowledge is something to be shared, and the experienced are encouraged to mentor the young.

It was in one of these towns that Taara learned to use her bow. She also studied magic and learned to defend herself with a dagger, though she never particularly enjoyed fighting. Even during her training she found herself more interested in watching and protecting than attacking — the Defender was there before the title was.

Away from the capital

The further one travels from Ayrith, the quieter Ether becomes. Eventually the roads disappear into Naaru.
