Ether's Flame

The life of Ether itself. Strahd's papers and the Zephyrian songs also call it the Heart of Ether. It cannot be put out, only moved. Since session 31 it is back in the Burning Tree, restored from Taara's Amulet of the Planes.

Ether's Flame: a white-gold fire held in a silver filigree setting

What Ether is

Ether is a living body, not a place with weather. The warmth, the light, the hum Taara lived inside, the powers of the Zephyrians: all of it was one heart beating. The Burning Tree was not the source. The Tree was the hearth, the vessel built around the heart, and the flames it carried were the heart showing through.

What the flame is

Ether's Flame is the life of the realm. It gives life, it does not merely burn. Inside a body it is warmth, growth, connection, the hum beneath everything. Outside a body it has no vessel, and a heart with no body takes the only shape raw life can hold in the world: flame.

Rules that follow from its nature:

  • It cannot be put out. A heart is not extinguished, only moved.
  • It does not diminish. It is not fuel, it is life, and life in a vessel sustains the vessel.
  • Whatever carries it passes warmth and life onward, whether the carrier understands this or not.

The freeze

Ether was never attacked and never cursed: the freeze was Taara's own casting. What it was, what the cold-sigils are, and the seams it left in her memory are on The Great Freeze.

The true order of events

Taara's player-written backstory stays word for word true as her memory of events. This is what actually happened; the song Ether's Flame tells it from both sides. This is the one place the true order is kept: other pages link here instead of repeating it.

  1. Taara serves as a Defender for centuries, leaving Ether for long stretches of duty.
  2. On one such stretch she crosses the valley and befriends the old count. She meets his son many times at his table, fights in the count's war, and at the funeral she and Strahd talk until the candles die. That is where they grow close. She marries him, all of this in his mortal prime (The Blue Rose Wedding).
  3. Strahd ages beside a wife who does not. He hunts a way for them both to stay young together forever, and his research (his mortal-era treatise on the winged folk) leads him to the flame in the Burning Tree, the thing that keeps her people ageless. He does not want a throne; he wants to keep them both the same.
  4. She discovers what he is hunting. She pleads that a mortal life, however brief, is worth more than a deathless one; he refuses. She leaves him before dawn and goes home to do the only thing she can: move the flame beyond his reach.
  5. She casts the freeze, knowingly naming Ashenwood as the receiver, because the Gift needs a named receiver. The casting overshoots: Ether freezes and she alone is locked outside.
  6. Strahd finds her at the sealed barrier, too late. He knew the way, he was hunting it. He erases the marriage: part mercy, part cover, part keeping a guard off the prize. He binds the years into Kept Memories (The Erasure).
  7. The flame lands in Ashenwood, where it has no vessel, and begins to burn.
  8. Strahd, the flame lost to him, takes the Dark Powers' bargain as second best. This is roughly eight hundred years ago, which matches his vampirism, the wedding portrait, and the book in the gallery.
  9. Taara wanders eight centuries hunting the sigil-placer, and eventually walks back into Barovia without knowing it is back.

Kept Memories is part of the concealment. Strahd wrote it and altered it to be believable, so that even a full restoration would keep lying about the sequence. That is why the reading was stopped where it was stopped, and why he tells her not to worry about it.

Where it has been

  1. The Burning Tree. In its proper hearth, for as long as Ether existed.
  2. Ashenwood. Taara named it as the receiver, and the flame landed there with no vessel to hold it. It became fire, small at first, feeding and growing for centuries. In Logi's lifetime it had grown into the fire elemental, and by session 25 into a molten titan. It was never a monster that got strong. It was a vessel overfilled.
  3. Logi (sessions 25 to 30). Strahd sold him the means to take the titan's flame (the session 23 contract, delivered in session 25), a refined casting of the same craft. Logi killed the titan and ran the transfer through the Bloodspear. He did not put the flame out: he took it. Strahd told him afterwards in the library that this was the one service their contract paid for, and that where this fire burns, his hand can reach. Logi carried it in both hands, blue in one and orange in the other, and ran hot enough that water would not cool him.
  4. The Sorceress's den (session 30). Logi cast fire inside the den. The Sorceress recognised it as Strahd's, caged him for bringing the lord into her home, and the flame showed other werewolves where the den was.
  5. The Amulet of the Planes (session 30). While Logi was caged and helpless, Taara cast the Gift (the table called it the Transfer spell) with Myra's help and moved the flame out of him and into the Amulet she has always worn. Logi kept his own wildfire, smaller and free of the lord's hand. Cinder kept his piece and is fine.
  6. The Burning Tree, restored (session 31). On frozen Ether the flame went back into its hearth: Ether's Reignition.

What it did along the way:

  • Logi's fire could not be put out (the candle at breakfast, session 26). Every fire from his spells left a burn behind. The terms are on Logi.
  • Cinder burns on the same flame. The little spirit the party has known since session 3 is sustained by a piece of it.
  • Something in Ashenwood is still burning: residue of the transfer, what the Bloodspear did not take.
  • Strahd's hand reaches into the flame. He opened the crossing, and whatever crosses pays the water. He holds a lien on the channel, not command of the fire.

Taara has stood in the same room as her people's heart and felt nothing but a headache.

The crossing (session 30)

Taara used the Amulet to cross with Myra and Logi. She did not go to Ether. She brought Ether to the Shadowfell. The realm her people are frozen in now sits in the plane of the Dark Powers, the same powers Strahd bargained with when the flame was lost to him.

Strahd's voice reached her the moment she arrived, through the flame inside her Amulet. Where the fire burns, his hand can reach.

Mark, just outside the Amulet's range, was split by the crossing: his evil side and his evil sword went to an unknown plane, and he was left a pure soul with a good sword. The crossing also took a few spokes of Logi's cage.

What follows from it:

  • The flame is in an object, not a body. Life in a vessel sustains the vessel; what an amulet does with a heart in it is open.
  • The frozen Zephyrians are now in the Shadowfell. If the flame wakes them, they wake in the Dark Powers' ground.
  • Strahd's lien. Every casting tithes and he holds the channel. A crossing of this size through his channel paid him something. What, is open.

The craft

The cold-sigils and the spell the Gift are the same craft.

  • Every casting routes through the root. A transfer does not jump between vessels, it travels through Ether. Any casting of the Gift brushes the frozen realm for an instant: mid-cast the caster feels the hum of home, a twitch in a body everyone assumes is dead.
  • Every casting tithes. Whatever crosses pays the water. Each use of the craft feeds something small to whatever holds the channel. Casting the Gift is never free for the world, only for the asker.
  • The Gift is Zephyrian craft, older than Taara, the way the Tree sustained her people: it gave, they received.

Restoring Ether

To restore Ether the flame must cross back to the Tree. The Gift's own restrictions make this the hardest choice:

  • The giver must be willing, sleeping, or helpless.
  • The amount is unmeasured, and a transfer may take more than was meant.
  • Since session 30 the Tree itself stands in the Shadowfell.

In session 31 the flame went back into the Tree (Ether's Reignition). What it has woken, and what it paid on the way, is open.

Still open

  • Strahd's belief about the freeze: does he know it was an overshoot, or does he think she stilled Ether deliberately to spite him?
  • Does he suspect she remembers? He knows what was erased.
  • Whether the Gift can draw from the memory orbs in Morgantha's vault (containers, not minds).
